The ‘transition’ from the asylum system to refugee status involves navigating a number of new systems of support. This Move-On Guide, updated December 2024, explains what happens next, including:
- Starting a Universal Credit claim online or go to the Jobs and Benefits Office and ask them to help you. The sooner you do this the sooner you will start to receive payments. It is recommended that you open a UC account immediately after you receive your positive asylum decision.
- Getting access to your eVisa.
- Opening a bank account – you will need this to receive Social Security payments or wages from employment.
- Finding accommodation or asking the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) to assist you.
