Cities #WithRefugees was launched in advance of World Refugee Day (June 20) in 2018.
It has mobilised more than 130 cities in 42 countries in a global call for even more local
municipalities to join their effort in welcoming and including refugees. Any city can sign onto the
document here– helping to send a strong message of global grass roots solidarity for families
forced to flee. UNHCR aims to sign up at least 200 cities by World Refugee Day 2019.
What you can you do:
Invite cities to sign!
Please note that most cities have to get agreement from the city council to sign which can take a
month—so please start the conversation now!
Engage cities that have signed the statement on World Refugee Day
A communication toolkit prepared with key advocacy messages and assets that
mayors/cities can share at key moments is now available. We encourage the
communication teams of signatory cities which to integrate messaging from this toolkit into their
communications plan. UNHCR will measure the reach of messaging through social media and
traditional media channels.
Encourage cities to participate in and or initiate an event which promotes inclusion— for
example; a refugee food festival, a walk or run in connection to 1 billion miles or LuQuluQu, a
signing ceremony, or a World Refugee Day event.
