About this event

Are you interested in setting up a Sanctuary Scholarship at your institution, but unsure where to start? Join STAR’s Access to University Coordinator Siobhán Coskeran, Universities of Sanctuary Coordinator Maryam Taher and members of staff from universities with established scholarship programmes for an introduction to the process.

Sanctuary Scholarships are gateways to university for prospective students from refugee and migrant backgrounds who would otherwise be locked out of higher education due to their immigration status. In the UK, people who are seeking asylum or have limited leave to remain are usually unable to access student finance and are charged international fees. Others who have already overcome significant barriers to continuing their education often need additional financial support to take up their place. Sanctuary Scholarships help to make sure that your university attracts the best and brightest students, while also giving you the opportunity to join a movement of over 70 universities committed to creating a culture of welcome and support for people who have sought sanctuary in the UK.

The workshop will include:

  • A brief introduction to the key elements of a Sanctuary Scholarship programme;
  • The opportunity to ask questions;
  • Information about where to access further support as you go through the process of setting up a scholarship.

This event is intended for university staff who are interested in setting up a scholarship for students from forced migrant backgrounds at their institution. University staff who are interested in expanding a scholarship programme at their institution or sharing their experience of administering a Sanctuary Scholarship are also welcome to attend.

Co-organised by Student Action for Refugees and Universities of Sanctuary.
