York St. John recognised as a University of Sanctuary

York St John University recently acquired University of Sanctuary  status following the submission of a great application. CoS Regional Coordinator for Yorkshire & Humberside Sara Trewhitt and York City of Sanctuary Chair Paul Wordsworth presented the certificate to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Karen Stanton at a celebration in early November. Local refugees who attend classes and events on campus participated in the celebration, along with a number of students, professors and local non-governmental groups. The University has demonstrated a deep commitment to supporting refugee and asylum seekers in the York community and across its campus. From Student Union leaders to the Vice-Chancellor, York St John has embraced an ethos of welcome and inclusion.
Specifically, the University is providing support across a range of areas, including English language tuition, research into the experience of refugee and asylum seekers, and sanctuary scholarships to outstanding scholars,   York St John has kindly agreed to host the inaugural Universities of Sanctuary conference next September 2019 which will bring together Universities from across the UK to share learning. City of Sanctuary is delighted about the collaboration being forged with York St John.
