Throughout September 2020, thousands across the UK will join the British Red Cross and choose to move for those who don’t have a choice.
Miles for Refugees is a virtual sponsored event, challenging the nation to cover the miles a refugee might be forced to travel to reach safety – in just one month. Hitting the distance target can take place in any location and at any time, so supporters can take part despite the pandemic, with at-home exercises like yoga or aerobics counting towards the miles total too. There are six distances to choose from, ranging from 22 miles to 555 miles, representing some of the routes refugees are forced to take to safety.
The British Red Cross is the UK’s largest independent provider of refugee support. Its teams have continued to help refugees and people seeking asylum throughout the pandemic, including delivering food parcels, finding emergency accommodation and working with Doctors of the World to produce vital information on the virus in a wide range of languages.
This is the fourth year of Miles for Refugees, with the movement growing larger every year. Last year, over 2,000 people raised more than £425,000 for refugees in the UK, and this year is set to be even bigger.
