Newcastle University has announced it will be awarding three scholarships to people seeking sanctuary to study at the university. The Sanctuary Scholarships are part of its work towards becoming a University of Sanctuary, and in response to calls by many individuals and groups campaigning for fair access to higher education for people seeking sanctuary.
The scholarships are for undergraduate, postgraduate taught and research study and cover the cost of full tuition fees and living expenses. Currently there three places available – this will be to start University in September 2020. There are full details on the website, including terms and conditions and information on how to apply which can be accessed by clicking here.
This is fantastic news and will offer asylum seekers the opportunity to continue their studies, when they would otherwise be unable to do so due to funding restrictions. There are a whole load of brilliant people out there, who are desperate to go to University and continue with their studies. These scholarships are a welcome antidote to the hardship that many people seeking sanctuary have faced and continue to face seeking asylum in the UK.
