Detention campaigners are calling for its supporters to lobby their MPs to support the push for a 28-day time limit on immigration detention. Currently 78 MPs have added their names, but detention campaigners say there were still lots of MPs to lobby for them to add their names. The human rights group, Liberty can provide support on how to lobby or campaign on this issue.
The UK has one of the largest immigration detention systems in Europe and is the only country in the region without a statutory time limit on length of detention.
Liberty has also released a report into the cost savings a 28-day time limit would make. You can read the Guardian piece here.

Detention statistics
The latest immigration statistics – including detention and returns – were released last week. While numbers entering and leaving detention continue to fall overall, there were 1,839 people in detention on 31 March 2019, up from 1,784 on 31 December 2018. In the first quarter of 2019, only 39% people leaving detention were removed or deported, down from 42% in the previous quarter.
