As greater numbers of people seeking sanctuary are housed in institutional settings like hotels for long periods of time, we hosted a free online event to share ideas and best practice.

This event was designed to support and empower City of Sanctuary regional groups to learn more about hotel accommodation. We are very grateful to our wonderful list of speakers which included:

  • Mabli Jones of Asylum Matters provided overview of the wider picture around hotels and institutional accommodation and Asylum Matters work on this issue.
  • Elahe Ziai of IMIX provided key suggestions for how to manage any media queries/reports around the hotel accommodation issue. Her Power point can be viewed here:
  • A person currently living in a hotel shared his experiences.
  • Chloe Harrison of Newcastle Council/Inclusion team spoke about hotel accommodation in the NE/Newcastle over the last year and reference how the council works with local groups to support people. You can see her slides here:
  • Sarah Stewart, Falkirk FOSS – She shared how FOSS have been supporting people in hotels.
  • Liz Hibberd of Manchester CoS – She spoke about how Manchester CoS has supported hotels in/around Manchester. You can see her Powerpoint here:
There will be time for Q & A and open discussion after the speakers have shared their expertise.
