In addition, health care practitioners have tried to understand and meet the needs of this vulnerable group. This stream aims to support City of Sanctuary Groups and Health Practitioners to develop and share good practice in inclusive health care for sanctuary seekers. The COVID-19 pandemic has created new challenges. Round table event chaired by City of Sanctuary UK Trustee Jeff Morgan.

The following speakers will present key issues for 10 minutes each followed by a Q&A:
– Cathie Railton, Programme Manager (Yorkshire and the Humber), Public Health England
– Vicky Ledwidge, Migration Yorkshire and active in the Migrant Health Network
– Emmanuel Serrano, UK Policy and Advocacy officer, Doctors of the World
– Simba Mujakachi, discussing the Justice for Simba Campaign

People are welcome to attend this online event from anywhere, but the focus will be on health provision in Yorkshire, Humber and the North East.

1.30 – 3.30 Mental health – issues and experiences of people seeking sanctuary – things that work (and things that don’t work.)
Mental health and well-being is a big issue for many people seeking sanctuary, made worse by the many impacts of the hostile environment. In this session we will look at some of the problems people face in getting help for mental distress and trauma and explore ideas for making things better.

People are welcome to attend the afternoon session online from anywhere in the UK.

The session will refer to the City of Sanctuary Mental Health Pack. You may like to read this in advance of the session – click here.
