Join the Movement for Welcome

Any organisation, institution, community group or individual can join the City of Sanctuary movement. If you share our vision of a UK that offers compassion, dignity and welcome to people seeking sanctuary – and commit to upholding our shared values – you are already one of us.

What It Means to Join

By becoming part of the network, you are joining thousands of people and organisations working together for positive change in communities across the UK.

As a network member you can:

  • Receive our national newsletter
  • Subscribe to regional and sector newsletters
  • Hear about events, opportunities, training and resources
  • Connect with others who are taking practical action for welcome

This is your gateway into a supportive, inspiring and growing community.

The First Step to a Sanctuary Award

Joining the network is also the essential first step for any organisation or institution that wants to pursue a Sanctuary Award.

City of Sanctuary UK directly oversees awards for organisations within our official Streams of Sanctuary – such as:

  • Schools
  • Colleges and Universities
  • Local Authorities
  • Libraries
  • Faith institutions
  • Arts and cultural organisations
    … and more.

Other organisations may still work towards a Sanctuary Award where a local group is able to carry out the appraisal and support process.

Have a Voice in a National Movement

Network members can also choose to register as voting members, giving you a direct say in the development and governance of City of Sanctuary UK.

Voting members can:

  • Vote on key decisions at our Annual General Meeting (AGM)
  • Help elect our Board of Trustees
  • Play a part in shaping the future of the movement

Both individuals and organisations can register as voting members. Organisations will just need to nominate one representative to vote on their behalf. If your organisation is not a registered entity (such as a business or charity), you can simply join as an Individual Member instead.

Your Support Helps the Movement Grow

Our movement is powerful because of the people within it. We are a small team with a big impact – but we rely on the commitment and solidarity of members to keep going.

We therefore ask new members to consider making a voluntary donation when joining, to help support the continued growth and sustainability of the movement.
