Camps destroy lives. People seeking sanctuary should be welcomed as our neighbours.
This government plans to open a vast new camp in North Yorkshire. 1,500 people will be sent to this tiny rural community with no support in place.
It’s the wrong plan, in the wrong place.
The government’s track history of institutionalised accommodation isn’t good. Napier and Penally, former barracks used to house people, were condemned for being brutally inhumane and woefully inadequate.
People seeking sanctuary should be housed in our communities as our neighbours. It’s cheaper, it’s kinder, it’s clearly the right thing to do.
This camp is a very bad sign of things to come.
