80 countries across the world criminalise same-sex acts and six of these countries have the death penalty for homosexuality. In many countries, lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans individuals face execution, torture, rape and murder.
But many individuals who claim asylum in the UK on the basis of sexuality face stereotypes, assumptions and errors of judgement from UKBA staff and judges
“it was estimated that from 2005-2009 letters rejected 98 to 99% of claims from lesbians and gay men (this was compared to 76.5% of general claims from 2005-2008).”
