We welcome the new report from Detention Action, Without Detention: Opportunities for Alternatives, which outlines how the use of detention could be avoided through prioritising meaningful engagement with migrants over harmful and costly enforcement. For too long, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants have faced damaging indefinite detention and without proper judicial oversight. Amendments to the latest Immigration Act has partially mitigated UK policy to protect pregnant women and provide access to a bail hearing after six months. But far more needs to be done to reverse this dehumanising and cruel policy. There are alternatives and City of Sanctuary encourages all its supporters to send this report to their MP and ask them to do everything they can to ensure that the government acts on its recommendations.
