Strawberry Blonde Curls Theatre Company is Rosie MacPherson and John Tomlinson. The company was founded in 2010 on the GetAttachment.aspx-2belief that theatre can be an extraordinary tool to tackle taboo issues head on with gusto, heart and honesty. We have made five shows to date, alongside our other high- profile work individually and as part of other collaborations and venues.

We are touring our new show, ‘TANJA’ across the country in theatre venues in autumn 2016. The show is about one woman’s fight against detention in the UK and will highlight the issues about many being detained indefinitely. We are keen to hear from City of Sanctuary groups around the country where we can be part of your programmes of work.

We recently performed an extract of the show during the Sanctuary in Parliament event, at Westminster. We can offer free workshops with the artistic team and are particularly interested in working with Schools of Sanctuary in your areas. After each performance on tour, we will have an open forum for the issues and themes to be explored further.GetAttachment.aspx

‘TANJA’ – The Project

‘TANJA’ has been developed through funding from Arts Council England, with a week spent at Slung Low’s Hub, The Garage, The Bike Shed Theatre, The Lowry and Theatre Delicatessen. We have tested the material on three different occasions throughout that process, with sharing’s at Slung Low’s Hub, The Garage and Theatre Delicatessen (as part of Refugee Week). We were invited to present an extract at The Houses of Parliament, Westminster before an audience of cross party MPs as part of the Sanctuary in Parliament event, on Tuesday 1st December. Crucially, that was the day that The House of Commons commenced the second reading of the Immigration Bill.

Locked up. Shipped around. Sold as sex. In the black of night “Tanja” fled to safety on the shores of England. Another asylum seeker now held at Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre; Britain’s best kept secret. Refuge lies just beyond the barbed wire fence, but at what cost?

With immigration issues reaching fever pitch, this is the story of one woman’s bravery in the midst of prejudice and abuse. This is what she would have said, if only we’d let her…

An impassioned call to arms, a play and a campaign. ‘TANJA’ is a dramatic two-hander that blends drama, spoken word, physicality, puppetry, sign language and verbatim theatre.
