Today the Government announced life saving news. Thanks to you, the UK will open its doors to some of the most vulnerable refugees who have fled the Syrian conflict, offering them resettlement places and the chance to rebuild their lives in safety in Britain.
City of Sanctuary is proud to be a part of this campaign which has today changed history for many vulnerable people. You wrote to your MPs and spoke to your friends and family about this; below is a letter from our colleague Maurice Wren, who has been the voice of the partnership and campaign. Please be ready for the next action, which will translate a government decision into welcoming communities.
This is a hugely significant development and is something the Refugee Council, with your support, has been calling for since July.
The UK will now offer protection to the most vulnerable people fleeing the Syrian conflict including women at risk of sexual violence and survivors of torture. This announcement isn’t about party politics: it’s about compassion.
What’s more, it sends an important message to the rest of the world: Britain has a proud tradition of protecting and welcoming refugees and we will continue to lead the way in offering refuge to people in their greatest hour of need.
We expect the Government to announce more details, including how many resettlement places it will offer, soon.
Keep up to date with the latest developments on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
Thank you for your support. You have helped make this announcement happen.
