1. STREAMS OF SANCTUARY COORDINATOR – 0.5
Thanks to a two year grant from Unbound Philanthropy, we are pleased to announce that we will be launching the Welcoming Project in January 2014. The Welcoming Project aims specifically at supporting and building communications mechanisms for the Streams of Sanctuary, an integral part of the City of Sanctuary movement. As such, we are seeking to recruit a part-time Streams of Sanctuary Coordinator early in 2014.
The City of Sanctuary movement is working in over 30 cities and towns up and down UK where local groups in cross sector partnerships are committed to creating a culture of welcome especially for refugees and asylum seekers. Streams of Sanctuary – thematic sanctuary expressions which cross local boundaries – have sprung out of the movement over recent years. The first stream was Schools of Sanctuary, now active in around 10 cities, where schools are working towards receiving a Schools of Sanctuary award. We now have streams in Health, Maternity, Theatres and the Arts and Faith groups, as well as the New Arrivals stream where several cities are running welcome schemes for newly dispersed asylum seekers.
All this activity has been generated by enthusiastic volunteers, many of whom work in the above-mentioned professions, and this project will help to establish and resource the work of the streams. The Streams Coordinator will work nationally with local groups to underpin, link up, enhance and streamline resources as well as organising national and regional events to bring practitioners together.
