A petition has been launched by Sarian Kamara who is a survivor of female genital mutilation (FGM), a mother, a case worker for victims of crime and a campaigner against FGM. She campaigns with Forward and Manor Gardens as part of the Tackling FGM Special Initiative, training professionals and raising awareness amongst affected communities. The petition urges Theresa May to ensure women and girls seeking safety from female genital mutilation (FGM) are provided with refugee protection. More information on this topic can be found in Sue Lloyd Weber’s BBC Newsnight report which showed how the UK is failing to protect women and girls and on the Student Action for Refugees website. This article refers to the Home Affairs Select Committee Report on Asylum paragraph 51 which recommends that the Home Office better recognises gender based persecution
